Alexander-Arnold turned 21 on Monday and when asked how his landmark birthday was, he simply replied: “Yeah, good, Trained. Decent session.”
A brief lull between Saturday’s win over Leicester and Monday’s appointment with England at St George’s Park gave him an opportunity to see family and friends, but Alexander-Arnold already has designs on long-term goals.
It is unusual for one so young to speak in terms of legacy, but Alexander-Arnold is determined to embody the relentless collective mindset which has seen Liverpool win their first eight Premier League games and taken England to within one win of qualifying for next year’s European Championship finals.
“Winning trophies,” he said. “That’s the main thing, wanting to leave legacy behind, wanting to feel as though you’ve had an impact on club and country and be remembered. That’s the main aim, to win as many as possible, to go as far in tournaments as possible.
“I’d say I’ve matured as a player and a person, wanting to get better and improve, wanting to become a proper member of the team, playing a lot of games, picking up as many caps as possible and having an influence on the team. The experiences I’ve had have been incredible. I’ve learned so much.”
Nailing down a starting spot with England is his next challenge. Gareth Southgate’s post-World Cup switch from a 3-5-2 formation to 4-3-3 — an approximation of Klopp’s system at Liverpool — should help him in what looks a tough contest with Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The latter pair are not in the squad for the forthcoming qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, while although Trippier has impressed since joining Atletico Madrid, Alexander-Arnold is no longer in the shadow of the man who was, arguably, England’s most impressive performer in Russia last summer. The then Tottenham full-back started six of England’s seven matches, with Alexander-Arnold’s only experience of the tournament coming in the dead-rubber group match against Belgium.

Southgate’s decision to leave out Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard in addition to Walker highlights a renewed competition for places and Alexander-Arnold said: “There’s a lot senior players not getting into the squad, a lot of young players that are. I’m sure there’s a lot of headaches for the manager right now.
“It’s a good sign if you’re in the squad, but you need to perform and show why you need to stay in the next one.”
If Southgate shows the same faith as Klopp, Alexander-Arnold’s stock seems certain to rise further.
